ALP's Fly By Night Policies

Wednesday 8 September 1999

Clr. Parker has slammed local ALP attacks as immature and a reflection of the local Labor Party's bare policy cupboard. A brochure now circulating South Ward is solely devoted to attacking Max Parker. It reads like a Parker Dirt File.

"Dick (Richard McLaughlin) and the local Labor Party have paid me the highest tribute to a political opponent by distributing a brochure for me. It is disappointing that they have had to reach for issues up to 15 years old, and could not talk about the real issues like: Parks, backburning, extending Padstow Library, heating Revesby Pool, and numerous other issues more relevant to our local people."

"The airport is a non-issue - stirred up for the elections. The local ALP will forget this on the night of this election. Look at the Yeramba Lagoon at Picnic Point - this is a classic issue, where nothing has been done after nine months, since the State Election. The same protesters who oppose Holsworthy and Badgery's Creek are the ones who brought this issue to our Bankstown! You can thank the ALP for this. These same people should be protesting at their Federal member's office."

"The road from River Road to Picnic Point Road was discussed by myself in the late 1980s! The intention was to make Henry Lawson Drive a low traffic, scenic route, turning the new road which is where a road reserve was located anyway, into the main road. This would make the National Park one big whole (where Henry Lawson Drive cuts it in half at present), reduce travelling time, and most importantly reduce the death toll in one of the State's worst road blackspots."

"The high rise issue only became such when Clr. Ian Stromborg proposed in a Council Meeting that no building in Revesby should be higher than the Revesby Worker's Club. This building is six stories high, so I did not vote for it. Because I did not support this, (in fact voted against it) they assume I support 14 story buildings - when I have never said this."

An ALP source close to the Parker camp who leaked this brochure described the attack as "disgusting", "offensive" and having "gone one step too far!". The person said: "Max is such a good bloke who has done a great deal for the area. I can't believe in this day and age we have to so personally attack other candidates on 15 year old issues, and issues which are not even the truth. If this backfires on us or not, a number of my colleagues will be thinking long and hard before the next pre-selections."

"One former prominent local ALP member once told me "Don't start bushfires unless you can put them out!" Unfortunately the ALP have raised a lot of issues which they in fact started or caused. When the new Council meets I look forward to raising these and other issues with my ALP colleagues, whilst delivering every single one of my positive and progress policies."
